This site is a shared space provided to members of the CVC@ONE AI CoP, which meets regularly from October - December 2024. It is used by CoP members to collaboratively create and curate resources in support of the group's collective goals.
This CoP is a professional development offering from CVC@ONE with funding from the California Community College Chancellor's Office. It brings together 16 distance learning leaders who are preparing to lead a faculty AI CoP next term. A CoP is a well-regarded and researched approach to professional learning that is enhanced through social, peer-to-peer exchanges. CoP members embrace their role as learners by sharing their knowledge and questions, while engaging in meaningful inquiry to begin to untangle the opportunities and challenges ushered in by Generative AI.

Derived from the research of Lave and Wenger (1991), a Community of Practice (CoP) is an evidence-based model commonly used in professional learning. By definition a CoP is a group of people who "share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly" (Wenger-Trayner & Wenger-Trayner, 2015). A CoP requires the combination of three essential elements: the domain, the community, and the practice. These elements must be in place for the community to thrive. CoPS leverage the power of socialization, which is derived through human connection.
A Community of Practice is not merely a network of connections between people. It requires a commitment to a domain or shared interest. The domain gives the collective group an identity.
Our domain is our commitment to preparing students for a successful and fulfilled life. This commitment drives the urgency to advance AI literacy in California community colleges.
The community is comprised of members who commit to participating in discussions, helping each other, and sharing information. They care about supporting one another.
Our community is comprised of California Community College faculty, staff, and administrators with expertise in distance learning who are preparing to facilitate a CoP for faculty in Spring 2025.
Through interactions, community members develop a shared repertoire of resources: examples, experiences, stories, tools, ways of addressing problems that advance the domain.
Our practice will be facilitated through five online gatherings during Fall 2024 term, in which members will discuss related topics, experiment with tools, share their work, and develop the framework for their own AI CoP.
