Janie Kuang, Junior, ITP1 Teacher:
"I have taught classes before and worked with younger students, but online teaching was something new to us all. Fortunately, I had a group of amazing students and we were able to grow together and learn. It was amazing to see how much interest the young boys and girls had in programming, and their interest gave me the motivation to introduce programming and STEM to them in the best possible way.
As a teacher, I enjoyed teaching my students and introducing them to the world of programming. I am very thankful for this opportunity to pass my knowledge down to younger students during a time when there is a lot of changing factors, and it was a fun and valuable experience."
Tiffany Chen, Sophomore, ITH Teacher:
"This whole experience was very fun and I enjoyed it very much. Being able to share my love and knowledge of coding made me feel good and know that I am making a difference in the community. Working with kids and being able to help them and develop their interests was such a unique experience, and I am definitely looking forward to the next session."
Runxin Zhou, Junior, ITP1 Teacher:
"In teaching for both the spring and fall sessions of this service, I find myself being able to connect with my community in more ways than I thought was possible, especially during a time like this.
Though teaching, I have learned that I learn just as much from my students as they learn from me.
Overall, I thought that it was a very valuable experience and I was able to feel my own growth throughout [all of] these seven months."
Sheza Saiyed, Junior, ITP Teacher:
"The fall session was a a bit slower compared to the summer session as the students were slower at comprehending the content. So I spent more time getting in depth in concepts rather than touching base on all 10 concepts that I planned to teach. We still managed to cover more than 70% of the content. There was minimal participation on behalf of the student. Only 2 out of the 4 students participated in class discussions and in assignments too. One student also had fluctuated attendance so it was hard on me as a teacher to keep everyone on the same page (even though I always sent the zoom link and information 1-2 days prior). However, the class overall was pretty involved and we all had fun learning the concepts together."
Carolin Pan, Sophomore, ITH Teacher:
"I really enjoyed teaching the Intro to HTML course. Not only was I able to teach younger children about the things I'm passionate about, I also learned a lot myself. If given the opportunity to participate in similar community services in the future, I would join without hesitation."
Asilah Maryam, Junior, ITP2 Teacher:
"Hi my name is Asilah and I taught Intro to Programming 1 and 2. Something I learned over the course of teaching is that students are insanely creative. Seeing the creativity in their project submissions along with listening to their fun conversations made it worth teaching them. This experience made me feel like I was making a difference in their lives."
Maxine Wu, Junior, ITP Teacher:
"Teaching Python for the Loop Project has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me, both in terms of the growth I've seen in my programming and teaching skills and for the growth I've seen in all of my students. For me personally, I improved my teaching skills and experience. I learned how to design a curriculum, create informative lesson plans, and plan engaging activities to help the students stay alert and attentive. It has certainly been a learning experience; at the beginning, it was difficult for my students to pay attention to the lectures. However, once I started adding fun games and mini projects, the students felt a lot more engaged. Also, adapting to distance learning was challenging at first, but slowly but surely, we are all learning to get used to new times.
During my time as a teacher, I also had the pleasure to get to know all my wonderful students and teach them the basics of programming over these last ten weeks. I always love introducing people to programming because it's an interesting and important skill, especially in the 21st century. Having basic knowledge of programming is so important in many fields of science and engineering, so it’s important to spread the knowledge of programming through classes, events, and other activities. I am glad I was able to use my skills to benefit the community by teaching these programming classes."
