About Us

Since Mediaeval times, particularly in Britain where the wool industry was the backbone of the country's economy, weavers have organised themselves into Guilds. Nowadays, there are small guilds of amateurs throughout the world and this tradition seems to be particularly strong in Australia.

The Adelaide Hills Hand Spinners & Weavers Guild is one of the guilds in South Australia and was formed back around 1972 after a meeting was organised by the first President. Members would meet each month in the Mylor Hall for about a year before moving to an old cottage, Burnbank, located in Mount Barker Springs. They later moved to a room in what was once the Morning State Hotel at Wistow, then to the old Grandstand at the Mount Barker Oval. It wasn’t until 1989 that the members starting meeting at the Littlehampton Hall.

Nowadays, we are a large happy, vibrant community who contribute their knowledge and skills to assist and support the next generation of hand spinners and weavers. Committee members generously volunteer their time and hard work to ensure the successful running of the guild.
