Member Society: The AHHS Astronomy Club is a proud member society of the Astronomical League, an 18,000+ member federation of over 300 astronomical societies from across the United States. Serving to promote the science and enjoyment of astronomy, the League has been conducting astronomy outreach programs since its foundation in 1946. Our membership within this group opens observing programs, national conventions, quarterly magazines, and youth awards to all of our members! These programs are descibed in greater detail below.
Observing Programs: When observing the night sky, navigating the stars and learning how to find different targets can be challenging for many beginners. However, the League's observing programs provide direction and reward for one's observations, making learning the sky fun and intuitive. These programs cover all levels of observing experience and a wealth of different object types. Beginners may wish to start with the Lunar, Universe Sampler, or Constellation Hunter programs to teach themselves the basics of stargazing and telescope use. More advanced observers will find the Double Star, Messier, and Open Cluster programs well-suited for pushing one's observing skills. Completion of these observing programs is recognized with colorful pins and certificates. For more information, see the League's list of over 70 certificate programs here: (https://www.astroleague.org/observing.html).
Reflector Magazine: Published quarterly, the Astronomical League's Reflector magazine is full of observing articles, equipment reviews, award-winning photographs, and current League news. Enthusiasts of astronomy will surely find appealing reading that covers all of their interests and favorite topics. Additionally, each issue of Reflector carries a list of members who have completed particular observing programs. This is an excting way to recognize your achievements as an observer and astronomer! Membership in the AHHS Astronomy Club provides members with copies of Reflector distributed digitally and to physical mailing addresses. (https://www.astroleague.org/reflector)
Youth Awards: For years, the Astronomical League has provided awards to young astronomers involved in research, service, and observing. Among these are the Jack Horkheimer Youth Awards that recognize outreach service among young members, awarding them with cash prizes, a plaque, and expense-paid trips to the AstroLeague National Convention in Albequerque. For those interested in science research projects, the National Young Astronomer Award (NYAA) encourages youth to engage in research from their backyards. Past projects have investigated radio emission sources, asteroid photometry, and impact crater formation. (https://www.astroleague.org/al/awards/awards.html)
