AHG Tenderheart/Explorer Handbook p 38
"Service is giving of your time, your talents and your hard work for some one else's benefit."
How can we serve others in our community?
Start with small acts of kindness - share your lunch with someone who forgot theirs, help out a class mate who is having a hard time, give flowers to an elderly neighbor or volunteer your time at church. There are many opportunities for service at Troop 0716 but you can also find them in your own neighborhood, school and church circles. Pay attention to the needs of others and you will find places you can help.
According to AHG guidelines, "service is given freely and without expecting anything in return."
What counts as service? As a starting point, AHG policy considers the following regarding service activities:
Service comes from the heart.
Service is outwardly focused. This means the activity/tangible product is not for family members, (this includes extended family as well), not for the troop, and not for personal use such as food or goods.
Service is not compensated. Examples of compensation are money, gifts, free access to an event, food, or activities.
Service can be acts: making meals for others, working at shelters or food pantries, altar serving, volunteering your time and talent where it is needed. There are so many ways to volunteer!
Fundraising for charitable organizations can be service.
***Fundraising for our AHG troop or for an organization that directly benefits the AHG member (for example school or sports fundraising) does not count as service. ***
If you still have questions, ask your unit leader or our troop coordinator
