William Lewis The Immigrant
William Lewis was born in 1594 in England (some would argue Wales) and died in 1683 in Farmington, Connecticut. In 1632, Lewis and his wife and twelve year old son were among the puritans who migrated to New England aboard the ship “Lyon.” They are a well documented family who started out in Cambridge Massachusetts and then ventured further to became among the first Europeans in Hartford Connecticut.1 Almost three decades before the notorious Salem trials, the first large witch panic took place in the newly formed Hartford.2 In 1650, Lewis Senior sat on the jury of the trial of John and Joane Carrington.3 The accused were found guilty and sentenced “to dye.” 4 His son William Lewis II went on to become the first recorder of the town of Farmington.5 In 1682 Lewis II was documented in a land for clothing transaction with a member of the Tunxis tribe.6
