Cézanne and the Old Masters
April 30, 5 p.m.
Though Paul Cézanne is often described as the bridge between Impressionism and modernism, his work was built through a sustained conversation with the art of the past. This lecture explores how he studied and reimagined tradition: from his engagement with artists like Poussin, Chardin, and Delacroix, to his desire to “make of Impressionism something solid and durable.” By tracing Cézanne’s dialogue with earlier masters,we will gain a better understanding of his response to history as a testing ground for his modern vision.
Structure: Each lecture is a live event via zoom: a brief check and introduction, to ensure that participants have been able to connect, followed by a slide-presentation of about 50-60 minutes, and a Q&A discussion of about 20-30 minutes. The link is sent on the day of the event.
Fee: 20 USD per person
