This lecture series examines how seemingly ordinary objects—books, mirrors, and maps—were transformed into powerful and multivalent metaphors in the hands of Old Master painters.
Books in paintings: emblems of devotion and learning, inviting reflection on wisdom and the passage of time.
The Mirror: vanity, truth, and self-knowledge, as well as the nature and the limits of perception.
Maps and Globes: the expanding knowledge about the world, as well as the individual self.
