Practical Information

This LMS Research School will be held at the University of Birmingham between Monday 24 and Friday 28 July 2023. It is anticipated that the majority of participants will arrive on Sunday 23 July (for a 9am start on Monday 24 July) and depart on the afternoon of Friday 28 July.

In the week following the conference, there will be a 3-day LMS Summer School on Geometric and Categorical Representation Theory at the University of Bath, which some participants may be interested in attending. Details can be found here.

Accommodation:

All participants will be provided with on-campus accommodation from Sunday night through Thursday night (unless alternative arrangements have been discussed with the organisers).

Accommodation will be at the Chamberlain residences in the Vale Village. The Vale Village is approximately a 20 minute walk from the Watson building, where the lectures will take place; more details on the Vale can be found here.

Check-in for the accommodation opens at 2pm at the Chamberlain Reception (37 Church Road, Birmingham, B15 3SR). If you arrive after 6pm, you will instead need to check in at the Shackleton Building, which is open 24 hours. A map of the Vale Village and the relevant locations can be found here.

Meals:

Breakfast will be provided at the accommodation.

We will be providing vouchers for lunch. These should be able to be redeemed at any on-campus vendor. Some information about food and drink on campus can be found here, although please note that not all outlets will be open at the time of the research school. More details will be provided during the week.

Dinner from Monday night through Wednesday night will be provided at Infusion in the Vale Village. On Thursday evening there will be a barbecue in the Vale.

For attendees from within the UK, it is recommended that you travel by train and arrive at University Station.

If you are travelling from abroad, the nearest airport is Birmingham Airport. University Station is a short train ride from Birmingham Airport, going via Birmingham New Street.

You can use the Campus Map to find your way around the University of Birmingham.  You can find University Station on the Map.

All talks, tutorial sessions and coffee breaks will be in the Watson Building, which is R15 on the Campus Map.

Wednesday afternoon:

There will be no lectures or tutorial sessions on the Wednesday afternoon. Participants in the Research School are free to use this afternoon as they wish; a few possible suggestions are listed below.

The Barber Institute: Located next to the Watson building, the Barber Institute of Fine Arts is an art gallery on the University of Birmingham campus. Admission is free. Details about the gallery can be found here.

Birmingham City Centre: The University of Birmingham is about a 10 minute train journey from the City Centre. 

Winterbourne House and Gardens: About a 10 minute walk from the Watson building, Winterbourne House and Gardens is an Edwardian house and botanical gardens. Details can be found here. You will have to pay for admission.

Climbing: Some Birmingham PhD students are going climbing, and invite you to join them. Please see below for details:

"Hi! On Wednesday afternoon (26/07), a few of the PhD students here at Birmingham will go climbing at the Depot Climbing Birmingham, and we invite you to come along! Information about price can be found here, it is possible to rent climbing shoes if you don't have any. If this is your first time climbing in Depot Climbing you need to fill in a form to confirm that you know the rules at the depot, this can be done at the depot but also on their website beforehand. To get to the Depot from the Watson building, one can either take the bus 61/63 from below the campus (bus stop edgbaston park road) to the bus stop Wrentham Street and then walk the rest. Another route is to take the train from the University station to New street and then walk from there.
