Host an International agricultural intern or trainee

Need a helping hand but not looking for a full time permanent employee ?

IAEA Programs have been operating through the International Agricultural Exchange Association (IAEA) for over 45 years. Working with our international network, we match young people between the ages of 18-30 years to suitable farming enterprises around the world to gain much valued skills and experience in international farming systems. Trainees also seek to be integral members of your family and community, and immerse themselves in the local culture.

We seek hosts who can provide full time work for 3 to 12 months in an Agricultural environment, whilst providing a cultural experience.

The work provided can be in various fields including broad acre cropping, extensive and intensive animal production, viticulture, or horticulture.

Interns and trainees

Intern or Trainee, what is the difference ?

The U.S. government classifies exchange visitors as interns or trainees with different qualifications and rules for each. IAEA will determine which category best fits an applicant. A brief explanation of each is as follows:

Intern

To qualify as an intern, on the day the program begins a participant must be enrolled in, or have graduated within one year from, a post-secondary academic institution outside of the U.S. and seek to receive internship in his or her field of agricultural study.

Trainee

To qualify as a trainee, the applicant must either :

• · Be enrolled in or have graduated from a post-secondary academic institution outside of the U.S. and have at least one year of practical experience in the field of agriculture in which training issought. or
• · Have at least five years of practical experience in the field of agriculture in which training is sought.

Interns and trainee’s come from all around the world, with varying skills and experience in agriculture. Some trainees are from farms in their home country, work or have studied in the field of agriculture or related sciences. All trainees are looking for not only work experience but the cultural experience. All are full of enthusiasm, want to learn and are ready to try anything !

What do Hosts do ?

• Provide quality training that meets the learning objectives of the participant, IAEA and the Department of State’s J-1 visas
• Provides accommodation and board for the trainee (either in your house or within a separate living quarter)
• Gives the trainee a monthly allowance; wages must meet IAEA standards.
• Provide cultural opportunities for the trainee
• Provide one week holiday per three months worked (either accrued or taken regularly)

To be eligible for hosting you must :

• Fulfill the requirements of an IAEA host, determined through an interview to ensure we can provide a suitable environment for the trainee
• Be willing to welcome the trainee into your home and business
• Have worker’s compensation insurance
• Be a paid member of IAEA
• Pay the Placement fee once a trainee has been assigned to you

NOTE : if you have already recruited a foreign intern or trainee, we may help you in assisting your applicant to get a J1 visa if he/she fulfill the requirements
