Here I post two lessons plans implementing the “Warmer, Web, What’s next” model suggested by Dudeney & Hockly (2007)
Topic: Entertainment
General objectives:
to describe films and books
to politely disagree with opinions
to tell stories and discuss plots
Level of students: Upper Intermediate.
Age: 17-18
Lesson objective:
to introduce a new use of the Simple Present
to recognize movie reviews and its structure
The teacher presents a matching game to complete and discuss in a whole class interaction. The game contains 6 sentences that reflect the uses of the Simple Present (extracted from Cambridge Dictionary | Grammar section). Four of them the students already know, so then in the Web section, the T will expand on the new uses of the tense, which are to talk about movies and expressing opinion.
First, the teacher will explain the new uses of the Simple Present and ask the students to provide 4 sentence examples to be written in the Bb.
Then, the teacher will share with the students a link to a BBC Article about the recent film "The little Mermaid".
First, the teacher will reproduce the trailer of the movie and then ask general questions, such as "Have you seen the movie? Do you like the story? How do you feel about this new version? Those who haven't seen it yet, would you like to watch it? Why/Why not?"
Then, the students will gather into groups of three, and skim and scan the article to try identifying intances of the use of the simple present to review the film. They will have to complete the following worksheet using Cambridge Dictionary Online and the article.
The teacher will give the students a printed worksheet with two text passages: a film review and a plot summary. The students will have to skim them and complete the chart below in order to identify the differences between them. Finally, the students will have to decide which one is a summary or a review by writing each title.
Lesson objectives:
to practise the structure of a film review
to describe a film they like
The teacher will ask the students to mention a film they like the most or one they have recently watched. The teacher will ask them what we have to consider when talking about a film, and will write on the Bb the key words they say, for example characters, development, climax, ending, length, etc.
The students will listen to this film review audio from the British Council page. Then, they will complete tasks 1 and 2 online. The correction will be orally as a whole class discussion.
Then, the teacher will provide the students with an offline worksheet to practice the key expressions of a film review (created with hot potatoes). Then, students will watch a short video about the two main questions to consider when reviewing a movie.
Students will be asked to think about the films mentioned in the Warmer section. They will write down the main aspects such as who te main characters are, and what the plot is about in format of list, in order to have organized what they will write at home.
At home, they will have to write a short review-like text where they tell what the story is about and what they think about it. They should include some of the key expressions seen in the Web section.
