Agoda booking hotel2017/2/11 21:56 Hi

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this but since it involves japanese hotels I thought to give it a try.

Saw some very low room prices on some Tokyo hotels on Agoda, maybe 4-5000 jpy lower than on the hotel's own booking pages. Even on booking.com, jalan, rakuten etc the price is not even that low.

I have heard of people being fooled by booking sites like this but others say they are fully legitimate, that it is the hotek's fault.

Anyway, can I really trust this price? It says all taxes included. Or may itend in me having no room at all or a room in the basement or smoking room instead of non smoking?by Fred (guest)

Re: Agoda booking hotel2017/2/12 13:19 I've used agoda.com previously for hotel stay in Philippines. So did my friend. Price was the best on the site.

I'm using it for my future stay in Japan. 4 out 5 of my hotels is currently booked through agoda. Only 1 was actually cheaper through hotel website (shocking). It's best to check various websites plus hotel's website before booking for best price.

One of the best things I love about agoda is booking rooms with FREE CANCELLATION so I can rebook when I look around for better prices. I have already cancelled 3x for some of my Japan hotels due to price difference of US$5-20 a night. But I initally booked my rooms 6 months in advance.by hibell77rate this post as useful

Re: Agoda booking hotel2017/2/12 13:44 oh. any your worries about having a room or not.

Just last week, I inquired one of the hotels that i'm staying at regarding luggage forwarding service. it was a general question so i didn't bother giving my reservations number but on email request form required my full name. when they replied back, they verified my booking (how many nights, type of room (single/non-smoking), etc and when I'll be staying with them. And this is for 2 hotels. I didn't know the 2 hotels I booked where sister hotels. One was booked through agoda and the other I booked on hotel website. And my initial email was through the one I booked on the hotel website.by hibell77rate this post as useful

Re: Agoda booking hotel2017/2/12 20:10 I guess Toyoko Inn has no option of extra rooms though, they are fully booked out in Tokyo the day I arrive (but I had one room booked for security, but not in the best area).

I was a little scared of using Agoda since I heard of high cancelling fees, hotels putting you in smoking rooms though booked a non-smoking, asking for more money, etc, but perhaps that is just a small annoyance among many good hotels...

Since the Jalan, Japanican, Rakuten, etc prices where much higher than the ones I saw from Agoda I was a bit cautious about it.

One hotel had a price of 12500 JPY per night, but Agoda put it out for 6700. A bit afraid the hotel would ask for the "remaining" 6000 yen or so, or that the room would be bad (I could not stay in a smoking room, I am too sensitive)...by Fred (guest)rate this post as useful

Re: Agoda booking hotel2017/2/12 21:32 I have always used Hotels.com, booking.com, rakuten including both japanese and english site and their offcial site, I compare all before making my booking including cancellation cost in which I always cancel falls into before penalty cost, so no charge.

That being said, I have never found agoda cheaper than any, although my recent booking for December, it's 750 Yen expensive for agoda. and agoda is reliable, but you do get problems that arises, this is same with any booking site.

Just remeber to check that taxes and extra charge will be added to the final cost, either on the booking site or at the hotel. and all booking sites don't add bath tax which should be about 250-300 yen for those with community bath, spa's and onsen's, you will have to pay for this at the hotel, no booking site add this, although some do mention about this.by kms899rate this post as useful

Re: Agoda booking hotel2017/2/12 22:51 This is not about Agoda nor Japan (I'm a resident here in Japan), but I once booked a hotel in Korea through booking.com, which of course is extremely cheap and have a wider selection of cheaper hotels than many other sites.

The site mentioned that the hotel accept credit card payment, but when I arrived at the hotel, it turned out that that they didn't. I told the nice hotel clerk that they must tell the site to correct the information, and I also wrote to the site directly, but the info hadn't changed even months after I left the hotel.

So I think that little things like that can happen. Perhaps cheaper sites pay less to their employees and their hotels, and therefore tend to be sloppy. The other thing I can think of is that they put you in very low categories, such as far away rooms without a view.

All in all, I always print out my confirmation slip, so that I could show it to the hotel even if the internet/electricity happens to be shut down. I also make an excuse to send a question directly to the hotel in advance (such as "I'm staying on these dates. Do you have shampoo in the room?") and print out the reply too. That way I know for sure that they have my reservation.

I usually don't worry much about slight price differences, but if you do, you should write to the hotel in advance to make sure. They should at least have a fax and understand plain English in short sentences.

If you can show written proof of whatever you need to be proved, they have to take care of it. For example, if they happen to get overbooked after sending out your confirmation, they basically have the duty to find another hotel for you. Same goes for the price. That said, I did sort of fight for my credit card, but soon gave up because all I had to do was to go around the corner to a bank and get my foreign currency exchanged.by Ucorate this post as useful

Re: Agoda booking hotel2017/2/13 07:32 I've used Agoda to book Japanese hotels and had no problems.

As Uco says, print out confirmation page, note the confirmation number, and this then allows you access to cancel if you need to. Print out cancellation number if you have to cancel and hold it until your credit card statement if checked to make sure you are not being charged. When you check in, show the confirmation page... it will have your rate and whether taxes and GST are included or extra.by LoveJapan (guest)rate this post as useful

Re: Agoda booking hotel2017/2/13 09:19 What you are seeing is the price before taxes and service charges. Many sites (booking.com, TripAdvisor and some hotel websites) add the taxes after.

(Also, Booking.com and Agoda are both part of Priceline and closely related.)

The latest "nickel and dime" rip I've seen is a major international hotel brand adding a tax to a tax for one of their Japan hotels.by JapanCustomToursrate this post as useful

Regarding the cancellation fees, albeit late to jump in the topic but I believe this has something to do with the cancellation policies as agreed between Agoda (or any other third party booking website) and the hotel, which leads to the topic about pre-authorized credit card -guide.com/forum/quereadisplay.html?0+154124. The cancellation fees is a 'good' business for hotel or Agoda since maybe Agoda's way of profit is thru your cancellation especially past the penalty date. It is also a recuperating fee in case of booker's no-show (what if everyone is no-show) which is fair especially on the part of hotel.

The thing in Japan is that the smoking room policies differ for every accommodation. If you have specified for non-smoking rooms, most likely you will get what you clicked but what is not in your control is the number of people who have arrived before your check-in that also preferred non-smoking room. However, there are accommodations that offer all non-smoking room but despite that, since the hotel used to have smoking rooms the smoke smell remained there forever.

About asking for more money, I never heard of that but if it refers to coin laundries then that is separate from the accommodation payment.by stikitingrate this post as useful
