Across the country, outside organizations funded by dark money groups have been sending deceptive letters, emails, and texts to public employees - including Glenbard support staff - trying to trick members into giving up their union rights.
These groups often pose as “information centers” or “help lines,” claiming to offer an easy way to “opt out” of your union membership.
They are not affiliated with AFSCME, Council 31, or Glenbard Local 1970.
Groups like the Freedom Foundation are backed by corporate special interests that oppose collective bargaining and public-sector unions.
Their goal is simple: to weaken the voice of working people and shift power back toward those who already have it.
These mailings often look official - they may use green colors, government logos, or phrases like “your rights” or “opt-out form” to sound legitimate. Don’t fall for it.
Be cautious if you receive:
Letters or postcards claiming to help you “save money” by dropping membership
Emails or texts directing you to a link that asks for personal information
Messaging that references “Freedom Foundation,” “Opt Out Today,” or similar campaigns
Tip: AFSCME Local 1970 and Council 31 will never ask for personal information through a third-party website.
These organizations know that when we stand together, we win better pay, benefits, and protections. If they can convince enough people to stop supporting the union, they weaken our ability to bargain strong contracts - which benefits only the employer and corporate lobbyists, not employees.

This short video from AFSCME explains how dark-money organizations like the Freedom Foundation try to mislead public employees with deceptive “opt-out” campaigns - and how staying informed protects your rights and your voice.
