ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Climate change, environmental pollution, forest fires, pests, diseases, and ecological disturbances, are some of the environmental problems affecting ecosystems, human health, and the planet's overall well-being. The Copperbelt University (https://www.cbu.ac.zm/), in collaboration with global partners are bringing to Africa the 11th WorldDendro conference to address these problems. The conference will bring together scientists, researchers, and students to exchange and share their experiences and research results on all aspects of tree-ring science. This event will provide an interdisciplinary platform for delegates to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical solutions adopted in addressing these environmental problems with the application of tree-ring science. WorldDendro (since 1986) is the longest running and broadest reaching international meeting focused on sharing and advancing the tree-ring science. Sponsored by the Tree-Ring Society (TRS) and the Association for Tree-ring Research (ATR), and convening for the first time on the continent of Africa, we invite you to join us at the 11th WorldDendro Conference in Livingstone, Zambia from 28th July to 1st August, 2025.

Grants

The conference organizing committee secured funds from the African Tree-ring Network (ATRN) to support participants of African Citizens and whose abstracts (oral or poster) have been accepted for presentations. Student presentation competition

We are pleased to announce the opportunity for students to compete for 1) best poster presentation and 2) best oral presentation. Students who have registered will be automatically entered into the competition. Awardees will receive a Haglof Increment Borer (courtesy of Haglof).

The Scientific Basis

Africa is the most under-studied continent for dendrochronology, providing opportunity for research to fill the gaps in environmental databases. The conference will provide scientists with the opportunity to see another part of the world with possibilities for future research. This conference will provide multiple opportunities for learning and networking, as well as inspire local people to engage in dendrochronological studies. The conference will be hosted by The Copperbelt University (https://www.cbu.ac.zm/) through Africa Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Mining (CBU-ACESM) (https://www.cbu.ac.zm/coe/)

Aim and Scope

We aim to bring together academic scientists, researchers, students, and practitioners to exchange and share their experiences and research results on all aspects of dendrochronology. The conference will provide an interdisciplinary platform for delegates to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical environmental challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the field of dendrochronology.

Registration will open soon. Costs vary by participant country of origin level of income defined by WorldBank and professional classification. Lower fees are available for professionals with a Tree-Ring Society (TRS) and the Association for Tree-Ring Research (ATR) membership. Registration fees for WorldDendro 2025 will be as follows (Note that registration costs have been updated since initially posted):

Conference Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics

We have adopted the Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics as enforced by the Tree-Ring Society. The Code of Conduct exists to to provide a safe environment that is free from all forms of bullying and harassment. The Code of Ethics is a set of principles and practices intended to guide professional behavior regarding the practice, learning, training, publishing, and communication of science, and governs all TRS members, staff, volunteers, and non-members participating in TRS-sponsored programs and activities. All organizers, participants, and attendees agree to abide by these policies.

Code of Conduct

The Tree-Ring Society is committed to providing a safe environment where the dignity of every individual is respected and therefore has a zero tolerance approach to bullying, harassment and sexual harassment (herein referred to as harassment). The Tree-Ring Society will actively endeavor to eliminate bullying and harassment of all kinds and will not tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind, whether it is by members of the Executive Council, contractors, members, authors, conference hosts or any other affiliations with the organization in the course of its operations.

Code of Ethics

The purpose of this code is to provide principles to guide the professional conduct for all members of the Tree-Ring Society (TRS). Members of the TRS are expected to abide by the Code of Ethics and the companion Code of Conduct on Bullying, Harassment and Sexual Harassment.

The TRS is dedicated to dendrochronological research and education, wherein we: promote tree-ring research and career development for the global dendrochronology community; provide a forum for communication by supporting the regular organization of international conferences, workshops, and fieldweeks; publish peer-reviewed dendrochronological studies in the Society journal Tree-Ring Research; and disseminate knowledge about dendrochronology to other disciplines and to the public.

Field School

Preceding the conference, we will host the African Dendrochronological FieldSchool. The field school provides an intensive learning experience in dendrochronology over 10 days. We have run the training annually since 2021, with trainings planned for 2025. Participants range from new initiates in the field to seasoned veterans with over 20+ years of experience. The target audience includes graduate students, scientists, researchers, and forest managers from around the globe. Master's and PhD students are particularly encouraged to participate. Previous experience in field or laboratory-based tree-ring techniques is not required. Group leaders of the fieldweek are among the top scientists in their respective fields of study as related to global environmental change.
