A sand dam is a reinforced concrete wall built across a seasonal riverbed to trap sand carried by flowing water during the rainy season. As the sand accumulates behind the wall, it stores large amounts of water within the sand itself. This stored water remains protected from evaporation and contamination, providing a clean, reliable, and year-round source of water that can be accessed through scoop holes, shallow wells, or infiltration galleries. A sand dam is a low-cost, sustainable rainwater harvesting structure that stores water within sand, ensuring communities have water even during long dry seasons.
A shallow well is a man-made water well that accesses groundwater found close to the surface, usually at a depth of less than 30 meters. It is constructed by digging or drilling into the soil until the water table is reached. Shallow wells are commonly used in areas where groundwater is accessible without deep drilling. When protected and well-maintained, they provide communities with a convenient and reliable water source for household use, farming, and livestock.
A school water tank is a 104,000-liter reinforced concrete water storage structure constructed within a school compound to provide reliable and safe water throughout the year. The tank is designed to harvest, store, and supply clean water for drinking, sanitation, and general school use. It is built using durable materials to ensure long service life and withstand harsh climatic conditions.
A rock catchment system is a rainwater harvesting structure that uses natural rock surfaces to collect and channel runoff into storage tanks. In this project, the rock catchment consists of three reinforced concrete tanks strategically constructed at the base of a large rock outcrop. During rainfall, water flows naturally across the rock surface, is guided through carefully designed channels and gutters, and is directed into the three tanks for storage.
These tanks provide a reliable and clean water supply for community use, reducing dependence on seasonal streams and shallow wells. Rock catchments are highly effective in arid and semi-arid areas because they maximize existing natural formations to harvest significant volumes of water with minimal environmental disturbance.
A solar pipeline system is a sustainable water supply solution that uses solar-powered pumps to draw water from a sand dam, shallow well, or borehole and distribute it through a network of pipes to community water points. Using clean, renewable solar energy, the system operates efficiently without the recurring costs of fuel or electricity.
The water is stored in elevated tanks, then flows by gravity to schools, households, farms, or kiosks, ensuring consistent, reliable access to safe water throughout the year, even during dry seasons. Solar pipeline systems reduce the time and physical burden of fetching water, support irrigation for improved food production, and strengthen community resilience to climate change by providing a sustainable, low-maintenance water supply for entire villages.
