Our Community-Led Approach

Africa Sand Dam Foundation uses a community-led, participatory approach to ensure sustainability, ownership, and long-term impact. We work closely with registered Self-Help Groups (SHGs), who play an active role in planning, implementing, and maintaining all projects.

Our model is built on a 50–50 partnership, where both ASDF and the community contribute to the success of each project.

Community Contribution:
SHG members mobilize local raw materials such as sand, stones, and water, and provide unskilled labor during construction. This involvement not only reduces project costs but also strengthens ownership, unity, and responsibility for long-term stewardship.

ASDF Contribution:
We provide the hardware materials, including cement, pipes, timber, nails, water storage tanks, and supply the skilled labor needed for the safe and proper construction of sand dams, school tanks, shallow wells, and solar pipelines.

This approach is applied across all our projects, including school water tanks, where parents (who are SHG members) contribute local materials and unskilled labor while ASDF supplies the technical and material support.

By working together, communities gain a deep sense of ownership, strong management skills, and the capacity to maintain the projects for years to come.

Community Capacity Strengthening

To ensure communities can sustainably manage their water and livelihood projects, we provide continuous training and support in:

• Group savings and loaning

• Sustainable and climate-smart agriculture

• Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)

• Menstrual hygiene management

• Livestock management and improvement

• Environmental conservation and restoration

• Energy-saving stove construction and use

These trainings equip communities with the skills they need to manage resources, increase food production, improve health, and build resilient livelihoods.
