Dedication and commitment to serving their community have paid off for Kempner High School’s Air Force JROTC Unit (TX-924). The 101-member unit earned the Silver Star Community Service with Excellence Award, presented by the United States Air Force, for completing nearly 3,000 volunteer community service hours during the 2014-2015 school year. Kempner’s unit is ranked among the top five percent of JROTC units worldwide to receive the award based on their average community service hours. Only 10 Texas units and 47 of nearly 900 across the nation received the award this year. During the 2014-2015 school year, Kempner cadets organized and supported volunteer efforts at various events, including the Be the Match Walk/Run, Memory Walk to Cure Alzheimer’s, the Darling Dash, USA/Fit Marathon, and Texas Children’s Hospital events. The cadets, led by Lieutenant Colonel David Graham and Chief Master Sergeant Lionel Jackson, contributed an average of 29.6 hours to last year’s events.
