جامعة ملايا UM تستمد اسمها من مصطلح “ملايا” كما كان يعرف اسم البلاد آنذاك. وأشارت لجنة كار – سوندرز المعنية بالتعليم الجامعي في ملايا، التي أوصت بإنشاء الجامعة، في تقريرها في عام 1948 إلى ما يلي: “ستوفر جامعة ملايا لأول مرة مركزا مشتركا يمكن فيه الاختلاط بين أنواع مختلفة من العرق والدين والمصلحة الاقتصادية في إطار جهد مشترك … بالنسبة لجامعة ملايا يجب أن تدرك حتما أنها جامعة لملايا”. وكان نمو الجامعة سريعا جدا خلال العقد الأول من إنشائها، وأدى ذلك إلى إنشاء قسمين مستقلين في 15 كانون الثاني/يناير 1959، إحداهما تقع في سنغافورة والأخرى في كوالالمبور. في عام 1960، أشارت حكومة الإقليمين إلى رغبتهم في تغيير مركز الشعب إلى جامعة وطنية. وقد صدر التشريع في عام 1961، وأنشئت جامعة الـ UM في 1 يناير 1962.

أنشئت جامعة UTeM في ماليزيا في 1 ديسمبر 2000 باعتبارها الجامعة العامة التقنية الاولى في ماليزيا. تقع في مدينة التراث العالمي لليونسكو في ملاكا، وتقع ضمن 766 فدانا من المناظر الطبيعية الخضراء المورقة تفتخر الدولة من بين المرافق الفنية في جميع كلياتها السبع. وكجامعة فوكس، فإن UTeM تفتخر بنقاط القوة في المجالات التقنية . وقد عززت UTeM سمعة كونها مصدرا لخريجي الهندسة عالية الجودة مع القدرة على تلبية متطلبات صناعات التكنولوجيا الفائقة. كما تمتلك UTeM كفاءات بحثية في المجالات التي حددتها باعتبارها أساسية لتعزيز اقتراح الجامعة الفريد وتساهم أيضًا في الدولة ولا تقبل UTeM الطلاب المحليين فقط، بل أيضاً الطلاب الدوليين، ويشمل هذا الطلاب من إندونيسيا والمملكة العربية السعودية وتشاد وسوريا وباكستان والكاميرون وبنغلادش وتنزانيا والهند والصومال وسنغافورة وقطر وفلسطين وليبيا والعراق وإيران وغانا وفرنسا واليمن ونيجيريا والأردن.

الجامعة الاسلامية في ماليزيا IIUM هي مظهر من مظاهر التطلعات الرئيسية للعلماء المسلمين في ماليزيا على أن يكون لهم جامعة إسلامية في ماليزيا لقيادة الأمة الإسلامية في جميع مجالات المعرفة. وقد كشف تون الدكتور Mahathir mohamad، رئيس وزراء ماليزيا الرابع في يناير 1982، عن خطة إنشاء المعهد الدولي للهجرة IIUM بعد مداولاته مع وزير التعليم وكبار المسؤولين الحكوميين وكبار الأكاديميين من الجامعات المحلية. وقد أنشئت الحكومة رسميا في 20 مايو 1983 من قبل الحكومة الماليزية. وقد استلهمت فلسفة الجامعة من نتائج المؤتمر العالمي الأول لعام 1977 حول التربية الإسلامية في مكة المكرمة

جامعة برليس في ماليزيا (UniMAP) تعد ارخص جامعة في ماليزيا هي المؤسسة العامة السابعة عشرة للتعليم العالي في ماليزيا. وافقت عليها الحكومة الماليزية في مايو 2001 ، بدأت كجامعة جامعية – Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara ماليزيا (KUKUM). وكان أول طلبة من المؤسسة تضم 116 طالباً في الهندسة بدأوا الدراسة في حزيران/يونيه 2002. في فبراير 2007، تم ترقية KUKUM إلى جامعة كاملة وأعيدت تسميتها جامعة ماليزيا بيرليس (UniMAP). الجامعة هي واحدة من أربع جامعات تقنية فقط في ماليزيا. وكان سبب وجود UniMAP هو إنتاج مهندسين ذوي مهارات عالية للوفاء بالمخطط الصناعي الماليزي ودعمه (Pelan Induk Perindustrian Negara). على مر السنين، ظللنا وفيا لهذه المهمة، بهدف إنتاج أفراد مثاليين يساهمون في التنمية الوطنية وجدول أعمال التنافسية في الصناعة.
