Ph.D., Pennsylvania State University, 2003

B.S., Tohoku University, 1995

My primary research interest is applying various geochemical tracers to understand elemental cycles in lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. My areas of expertise include stable isotopes, marine geology, petroleum geology, sedimentary geochemistry, marine biogeochemistry, paleoceanography, climate change, geologic hazards, radioisotopes, and gamma spectroscopy.

Going out in the field has been an essential part of my career as a geologist. In late 2004, I sailed on IODP Expedition 303 to the North Atlantic as a geochemist aboard the drillship JOIDES Resolution. I have also participated in ODP Leg 189 to the Southern Ocean off Australia as a sedimentologist in early 2000.

After the 3/11 Tohoku earthquake in 2011, I attempted to determine the degree and extent of radiological contamination across Japan using gamma spectroscopy. Read these news stories (6/17/2011 and 5/10/2013) appeared in a journal called Science about radiological contamination in the Tokyo Metropolitan and NE Japan. Click here for a compilation of Fukushima radiation contamination maps.

My current projects include (1) ground reconnaissance and UAV-based assessment of surface deformation induced by the 2024 New Year's Day Noto Peninsula Earthquake, (2) geochemical and UAV-based remote sensing investigations of the 2023 geothermal blowout in the Niseko volcanic field and (3) understanding triggering mechanism of catastrophic landslides and debris flows associated with earthquakes and excess precipitation.

Besides doing science, I've worked for an E&P (i.e., oil and gas exploration and production) investment firm for 6 years as a petroleum geologist, and then I've been running my own companies engaging in trading and consulting businesses since 2011.
