Many high schools in the US recommend or even require taking a second language for graduation, especially for students who intend to pursue a college degree. This means that students often end up in language classes from obligation rather than from genuine interest. However, helping students understand the value of a second language beyond fulfilling a requirement is key to them engaging and enjoying it. Whether the student is already planning on a particular career and doesn't see another language being useful or has yet to decide what their goals are, language teachers are responsible for promoting the benefits of multilingualism for each and every individual.
