Into the Woods

I walked for what seemed like a very long time. I hadn’t thought about where I was going or how I would get back to where I started until now. I had no idea where I was or what direction I had come from. I regretted not marking my path. I turned around to look behind me. The path from which I had come was still glowing. I was excited to see I could follow my path again in case I needed to get back to the tree I had emerged from.

I had stopped to gather my thoughts when I heard a voice murmuring.

“Hello?” I called out waiting for a response.

“…ugly, isn’t it?” I thought I heard someone say.

“Hello? Is someone there? You see, I just ended up here and I’m trying to figure out where I am and how to get home,” I said to the invisible people.

“It’s going to step on me!” I heard a voice yell from near my foot. In this world I was slightly taller than most of the plants on the ground. I looked down at my foot to find the source of the voice. All I could see was flowers. I bent down. "Maybe someone was smaller than me and under the flowers," I thought. I moved my hand to brush the flowers out of the way and I felt a prick in my hand. “Ouch!” I pulled my hand away. There was a thorn in my finger.

“How dare it try touching me!” I heard the voice again.

All of the sudden I saw the source of the voice. It was a tiny flower that resembled a human. The stem of the flower was the body, and face was composed of the petals.

“Oh!” I gasped. “What are you?”

“Ugh!” the flower exclaimed, “It’s ugly and rude!”

Voices of agreement murmured about, “Why, it is indeed.”...“Yes, quite.” As I looked around, I could see other faces in the flowers.

“I’m sorry!” I exclaimed. “I just don’t know where I am. Could you help me?”

“Is it talking to us?” one of the flowers questioned.

“Yes, I am,” I stated. “Could you help me?”

“If we ignore it, it is sure to go away,” another flower piped up.

“I can hear you,” I started to get annoyed. “Could you please tell me where I am?”

“Shhh! Just ignore it,” they whispered to one another.

I decided I was getting nowhere here, and I would continue walking. "What strange and unhelpful creatures those were," I thought. As I walked a little further I heard some music in the distance. It sounded very merry and joyful. "Surely, the source of the music could be nothing but nice," I thought.

I closed my eyes to hear the music better. I opened my eyes and walked toward the music. I could hear it growing louder and see welcoming blue and white light shining from behind some trees. The music was coming from that area. I moved the branches out of my way in order to walk through them toward the music. I finally saw the source of the music. It was a meadow full of fairies playing all sorts of instruments while others were dancing and flying about. They moved so gracefully and perfectly in time with the music and each other.

They were so beautiful. Their skinned glowed with a blue hue and everything around them lit up as they danced. Even the mushrooms they danced upon had a reddish-orange glow to them.

One of the fairies saw me and flew up to me. She couldn’t have been more than two apples tall. "Hello! Could you tell me where we are?" I asked her. Her arm was outstretched, and she appeared to be holding a berry of some sort. I looked at it as she placed it in my hand. It resembled a blueberry in size and texture except it was a rich pink color. She motioned for me to eat it. "Maybe she would talk to me if I ate it," I thought. I placed it in my mouth. Its sweet flavor erupted in my mouth. My arms and feet started to tingle, and the scenery started to grow around me.

"Did I shrink?" I thought. I was now no taller than the flowers that were near my feet moments ago. The fairy flew down to me, now being her size, and grabbed my hands and flew off with me toward the dancing and music.

We danced for what seemed like a long time, and then as the music came to a lull, I would ask the fairy nearest me where we were. All I could hear from them was a high pitched tinkle, much like that of a bell. I stayed and danced some more and waited for the song to end, but it never did. Each song led straight into the next. I danced for a while longer, and then decided I should be on my way.

My spirits were much lifted, but I still had no idea where I was or where I was going, and now I was no taller than the plants around me.

Author’s Note: I decided to write this story because I loved the story of Alice and Wonderland so much. I read the story in the Untextbook with Alice and Wonderland and knew that was what I would be writing my story about. I am already a huge Disney fan so I knew the story of Alice in Wonderland already quite well. As I read the story in the Untextbook, there were parts of the story missing from the story that I knew. I wrote this section from the original story that I know. In the original story, the flowers talk with Alice and decide she is a weed and chase her off. In my story I decided to just make the flowers rude and unhelpful.

I was listening to the Alice in Wonderland soundtracks to get inspiration for my stories. (Music is something that heavily influences my life.) I came up with the idea to have some creature dancing to Celtic music in the forest. Other than that, there isn’t much reason for the fairies now other than just serving as another thing Alice finds in the forest. A lot of the pictures I have found have helped me develop my story as well. I would have an idea of what I wanted and after Googling for a really long time; I would find an image that sufficiently represented what I imagined. Sometimes it was more detailed than what I had imagined and sometimes not.
