Float Naming Guidelines
We are pleased that you and your class are ready to embark on a grand adventure exploring Canada’s oceans using Biogeochemical Argo floats. Before you begin, your class will need to choose a name for your float. The name can be truly unique, but we ask that you follow the simple guidelines below. Please also note that all names are subject to final approval.
Guidelines
Float names are to be selected as a class
Please provide a short description of why you have selected this name for your float during the application process
Names may be representative of scientific concepts or hold special meaning to your class or school
Names may be from (but are not limited to) scientists, engineers or historical figures that have inspired your class
All names must be family friendly
Names should not have personally identifiable information (e.g., Harry from Halifax)
Inappropriate language and/or references are not allowed
Please avoid political references
Please avoid any trademarked or copyrighted names
Numbers and symbols cannot be accepted as part of names
We ask that names be grammatically correct and not have inappropriate punctuation or text abbreviations
Suggestions / Inspiration
Here are some naming considerations to help make your float uniquely Canadian:
Consider names that reflect Canadian multiculturalism, geography or icons
Think of sea creatures that are found in Canadian waters
If appropriate, consider a float name that incorporates words or names in French or a local Indigenous language
