In the Tour de France, KOM stands for King of the Mountains, awarded to the strongest climber. Riders earn points by being among the first to reach the top of categorized climbs throughout the race. The overall leader wears the iconic white jersey with red polka dots.
In Adobo Velo KOM stands for Kambing Of the Mountain.
Kambing means goat in the Philippines.
Goats are naturally curious and bold, exploring heights where few other animals go, showing a determined, almost stubborn, drive to reach high places.
If you can't make all 3 stages, you can make up stages with an informal or virtual ride. It must meet the 100 miles with 10,000 ft of elevation gain criteria.
Non Adobo Velo organized event rides qualify too, as long as they meet the 100 mile, 10k of climbing criteria.
Adobo Velo group rides are encouraged. Ride with your Brothers and Sisters and be covered under the club's insurance.
Record the ride on Strava and send it to adobovelokom@gmail.com . Ride safe, have fun and take care of each other.
All make up rides must be done before the KOM finale on May 2
Follow one of our training plans and eat (adobo and rice!) before and after your rides and workouts. Your engine needs gas. Your battery needs to be charged back up.
Be a friend to yourself and start off easy and gradually build up every week. You are training your muscles, joints, heart and lungs, as well as training your mind to endure. Recovery is just as important as training. Keep your hard days hard and your easy days easy. Stress + Rest = Growth
Fuel up with some quick absorbing carbs (gels, gummy bears, hydration mix) 20-30 minutes before the start of climbs.
Engage your core. Brace yourself as if someone is going to lightly punch you in the stomach. Do this as much as possible on the flats and the climbs, especially when putting down some power.
Divide your climbs into thirds (3/3). First third (1/3), start off relatively easy, you will feel like you have a lot more to give. Second third (2/3), is when your rhythm is starting to build and you will feel some strain, but far from wanting to give up. You are saving some for the end. Last third (3/3) is when you pull the trigger and ramp up the effort. Your body is warmed up and everything is working well. If you have nothing left to give in the last third, you paced the the first two-thirds too hard. If you paced the climb well, you should feel that euphoric rush at the top. Celebrate every summit!
Tech Tip!! Get that mechanical advantage.
Work smart and consider a compact chainring (50/34) and a wide ratio cassette (11-34, 11-36) Why grind when you can spin. The right gearing makes all the difference!
Kambing award- Each stage will have "KOM Challenge" segments from Strava. Lowest overall time from all 3 stages wins this honored award. Click this link to join the Adobo Velo KOM club on Strava

That which we persist in doing becomes easier to do, not that the nature of the thing has changed, but that our power to do has increased. -Ralph Waldo Emerson
