Currently, the K-12 market consists of powerful but disconnected components. Schools have access to each piece individually, but they lack the central "brain" to unify them.
1) Content Adaptive Tools - (The "Brains") These platforms excel at personalizing the curriculum but operate in silos regarding accessibility.
Examples: Khanmigo (adjusts difficulty for students, supports teachers with curriculum generation and IEP document writing), DreamBox (personalizes math paths), and Newsela (adjusts reading levels).
Current Limitation: These tools adapt the content (e.g., simpler text) but do not automatically apply accessibility features (like audio narration or high contrast) unless manually toggled by the teacher or student for every new assignment.
2) Assistive Technology Tools (The "Access") These specialized tools provide essential support but often require separate logins and manual setup.
Examples: Read&Write (text-to-speech and word prediction), Ghotit (dyslexia-specific writing support), and JAWS (screen readers).
Current Limitation: These generally function as standalone applications. They do not "know" what other apps the student is using, requiring the student to configure settings separately in every different program.
3) Where Orchestration Really Exists (But Not in Schools) In our daily lives, we already experience seamless orchestration and it sets a standard that schools currently fail to meet.
On Personal Devices: Operating systems like Apple iOS and Android act as true orchestrators. When a user turns on "VoiceOver" or "Text-to-Speech," the setting applies instantly across every app on the device—Safari, Messages, Maps, and Music. You set it once; it works everywhere.
In Workplace Tools: Platforms like Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace offer single sign-on, unified settings, and cross-app integration. A preference set in one tool (like dark mode or dictation) carries over to others. The ecosystem remembers who you are and what you need.
In Schools: This orchestration is missing. Most Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Canvas, Google Classroom, and Brightspace (D2L) function primarily as content banks with grading integration. While some tool integration exists (via standards like LTI), students typically still must sign into each app individually, and there is no cross-sharing of accessibility settings. When a student opens a reading app, it does not know they had text-to-speech turned on in their math app. Every tool starts from scratch.
A Move Toward Change: The industry is beginning to shift. Platforms like D2L Brightspace are building deeper integration hubs, and Canvas (Instructure) is expanding accessibility tools like "Ramp." However, these are early steps. No dominant solution yet exists that reads a student's IEP profile once and automatically configures all connected tools simultaneously. This missing intelligence layer, where the student declares a preference and the system enforces it everywhere remains the critical gap and the primary market opportunity.

Current Limitation: These tools allow a student to launch an app with one click, but they act as "dumb pipes." They pass the student's name and grade data, but they do not pass accommodation preferences. When a student launches an app via Clever, the app starts with default settings, forcing the user to manually turn on accessibility features again.
The technology exists to personalize content (Khanmigo) and to provide access (Read&Write), and even to connect them (Clever/LTI). However, no dominant solution currently exists that reads a student's profile once and automatically configures all connected tools simultaneously. This missing integration layer is the core gap that Integrated Adaptive Learning aims to fill.
