Mr. Derer
I am Adam Derer, special education teacher at Brooklyn Academy of Global Finance (BKAGF). BKAGF is a public high school in the Bed Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. I teach in an ELA and Earth and Space Science in integrated co-teaching classrooms to 9th,10th, and 11th grade students. I enjoy having students read stories about cultures other than their own to expand their horizons, as well as embracing stories from their own culture. I also enjoy utilizing technology in the classroom such as the smartboard and laptops for students. Educational games and online programs are used in my classroom to help students master the content.
My Bachelor's degree is in marketing from Wagner College in Staten Island. I did not originally plan to become an educator. After College I worked as a communications director at a nonprofit based in Staten Island. This non-profit is a partner with the NYC Department of Education. Through this opportunity I was able to realize my passion for working with young people. Now I am enrolled in the Ruth S. Ammon school of Education at Adelphi University and I am excited to be continuing my educational journey.
I believe that all students deserve the opportunity for a quality education, no matter who they are. I teach with a student centered approach, meeting my students where they are in their educational journey. Inside my approach is literacy, making sure all students have access to the written word. When working with students with special needs, I teach vocabulary in a way they can grasp. Modifying definitions and concepts helps students understand the content. While some students can answer open-ended questions easily, I provide sentence starters for others who need help. I hope that students will leave my classroom ready to take on the real world. In my classroom students will gain essential skills like critical thinking and problem solving. All students will have the chance to exceed their potential, through creating a classroom environment of acceptance and mutual respect.
