How to Request Accommodations in College:
To obtain accommodations in college, begin by locating your school’s Disability Services or Accessibility Office. This office assists students with disabilities in setting up the necessary supports for their classes. Before your meeting, gather any documentation that explains your disability—such as an evaluation, medical note, or previous 504 or IEP plan.
Next, schedule an appointment with the Disability Services staff to discuss your needs and how your disability impacts your learning. During the meeting, be sure to share what has helped you succeed in the past, such as extra time on tests, note-taking assistance, or the use of audiobooks.
Once your accommodations are approved, you will receive a letter or plan to share with your professors. It is your responsibility to discuss with your instructors how these supports will be implemented in each class. Throughout the semester, check in periodically to ensure your accommodations are effective, and reach out to Disability Services if you need any adjustments. Being proactive and communicating early will help you remain successful and confident in your college experience.
