The four men group: Josh Felser, Mike Sitrin, Aviv Eyal, and Dave Samuel, founded an online video site named Grouper in 2004. Sony purchased Grouper in August 2006 for $65 Million. One year later, Sony renamed Grouper as Crackle.

The earliest features of Crackle TV were TV shows, movies, and original content from the Sony library. Crackle launched its services on PS3, Bravia TVs, Sony Blu-ray Players, and Roku boxes in March 2011. Xbox live also partnered with Crackle to make its content available for Xbox 360 users. Crackle launched an application for Blackberry 10 in June 2013. In December 2013, Apple TV users also gained access to the Crackle content. Crackle added Animax in Jan 2012 to its content and removed it soon, by the end of 2013. In Australia, Crackle aired the popular soap opera from Sony, Days of Our Lives, after the TV broadcaster ended the show after 45 years.

Crackle also started streaming some anime shows from Funimation, Animax, and other animation networks. Sony Pictures TV blocked all Crackle services in Australia and the United Kingdom without any notice on April 1, 2014. As per reports, Crackle failed to compete with top competitors like Netflix and LoveFilm in these countries, and hence Sony ceased it from there.

Crackle added more than 140 movies to its library when it made a deal with NBC Universal Television and New Media distribution. It started carrying Sports Jeopardy!, a show hosted by Dan Patrick from April 30, 2014. Crackle made a big and crucial move when it announced a new feature, “Always On,” on April 14, 2015. Always On was an Internet TV channel like Vevo TV and was ad-supported.

SuperMansion was Crackle’s first animated series. The Art of More was its first hour-long drama. Crackle announced both of these shows together. It premiered SuperMansion on October 8, 2015. It was an animated comedy series and starred Bryan Cranston, Tucker Gillmore, Heidi Gardner, Tom Root, Keegan-Michael Key, Jillian Bell, Nicole Brown, and Wells. Zeb Wells and Senreich were the creators of this animated comedy TV series - Supermansion.

Sony Pictures Television Networks named Eric Berger as their Chief Digital Officer in November 2017. He was already Crackle’s General Manager.

A big change occurred on January 14, 2018, when Crackle made an announcement that they will be changing their name to Sony Crackle in the coming spring season. However, the name change didn’t last long as Sony sold most of the Sony Crackle’s stakes to Chicken Soup for Soul Entertainment who changed its name to Crackle. Sony sold the remaining stakes of Crackle to the same company on December 15, 2020, to give it Crackle’s full rights.

So, the current owner of Crackle is Chicken Soup for Soul Entertainment company.

In which countries can you use Crackle TV?

You can access Crackle in 21 countries right now. It is available in three different languages - English, Spanish, and Portuguese. From late 2016, Latin Americans had to pay a fee to use Crackle. This paid version of Crackle was ad-free. However, it didn’t last long as Crackle discontinued its Latin America services on April 30, 2019.
