Pre-k is a program for students going into kindergarten. It takes what is learned in the Tue-Wed class and expands on it, in preparation for kindergarten.
The name of my preschool comes from my educational philosophy- for children learning should be through being active. Being active in early childhood education is all about play! Play is the guiding force within my program. If you are looking for strict and rigorous learning, this will not be a good fit. The term "ready for kindergarten" I think is flawed, because education should fit the child not the other way around. I know though that there are standards in Kindergarten that children are held to, to a point I will prepare your children for them- but I don't believe they are age appropriate, thus not a leading force in my curriculum.
Throughout the school year I cover the state standards as outlined for preschool (https://www.schools.utah.gov/file/2f5c23cd-43cc-4ab1-b5d7-ef1f918362e9), but these standards are taught through a lens of cultural and social emotional learning. While we do learn about the letter sounds and numbers 0-20, its all through different cultural experiences. For example, there are two lessons I use at the beginning of the year and go over letter A and counting 1-10 (as pictured on the side). While my students get lots of exposure to the letter and chances to count, both stories focus on working with each other even though we are different.
Most of my cultural experiences for my students come from the diversity of the literature we read together, with a focus on holidays and celebrations from around the world. We learn about this such as; Indigenous Peoples Day, Halloween, Dia de los muertos, Diwali, American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month, Hanukkah, St. Lucia's day, and so many more! I have worked diligently to have books that depict and are written by many people of different races, nationalities, cultures, and abilities. I also feel that along with seeing people who are different than us in literature, we should also see ourselves. Each year as needed I continue to grow my library so that there is a piece of everyone in the stories that we read.
