ACT WOMEN'S MASTERS HOCKEY
Do you remember when hockey had ‘offside’ rules? Or maybe the tips and tricks required to play on grass fields with a cricket ball (these days they call it “3-D”)? And what about the three count ‘bully’? If you do, chances are you are over 34 and can come and play Masters Hockey!
Masters hockey targets women aged 34 and over. The ACT Women’s Masters participate and run events throughout the calendar year in both Canberra and across the country.
You don’t have to be just a player to be a part of Masters Hockey – join our Support Crew - many hands make light work!
If you are still involved in hockey or haven’t played for a while, there is a Masters opportunity for you.
ACT Women's Masters recognised people who have been involved for many years as players and/or team staff at national Championships

Congratulations to the ACT contingent members who have been selected to represent Australia at the World Cup, Auckland 2024. https://www.hockey.org.au/masters/australian-womens-teams/
Who are we?
ACT Women's Masters hockey are an affiliate of Hockey ACT. Each year teams are selected to participate in the Australian Women's Masters Championships, in various age groups from over 35's to over 65's. Masters players participate locally in the winter and indoor competition, and some participate in the local men's Monday night veteran's competition and other social competitions.
In November/December we host the Henstock Indoor Carnival, and in February/March we host the outdoor Freda Bennett Carnival.
If you are interested in getting involved please contact us.
History
In 1984, the ACT Hockey Association instigated and hosted a 3 day women's veteran's invitational tournament with teams from ACT, NSW, QLD, SA, TAS and VIC participating. Players were so keen to continue the concept of veteran's hockey that a motion was passed at a dinner held over the weekend to make the tournament an annual event.
The inaugural Australian Women’s Veterans Championship was hosted by Victoria in 1985 in Melbourne, where every State and Territory was invited to participate. Due to the over whelming responses, two divisions were created with the larger states sending teams for both divisions.
From 1989 the divisions became age qualified, with an over 35 division and an over 40 division. In 1994 an over 45 division was added, 1998 an over 50 division, 2003 a 55 division and in Hobart in 2009 a 60’s division.
In 2011 the name was changed to the Australian Women’s Masters National Championships to align with international recognition.
Canberra hosted the Championships in 1993, 2000 and 2010, and in 2016 hosted the 3rd Masters World Cup.
You don't have to have been around The day lightning struck hockey players at Southwell park, September 28, 1963. But you can read about it.
Freda Bennett - 1990
Freda Bennett
Information from Joan Henstock: "I had known Freda Bennett since 1961 and Freda Bennett got me to come out of hockey retirement in 1985 when she was looking after the ROYALS hockey team. Royals was coached by Sue Kellaher who was a sister to Heather McKay. Royals was sponsored by the Southern Cross Club and then 3 years later in 1988 the club became known as AINSLIE and were sponsored by the Ainslie Football Club."
My (Jenny Feltham) understanding was that some of the ladies from Ainslie were the ladies who started ACT Women's Veterans Hockey, now ACT Women's Masters, and were soon joined by a number of other women to host the first National Invitational Tournament in 1984 in Canberra which became the first National Veterans Tournament in Melbourne in 1985.
