Fellows Award – This award is announced at the ACR Conference and the award is given the following year (ie announced 2018 receive physical award 2019). Fellows will give an address the year they are presented the physical award and their address is printed in that year’s Advances in Consumer Research volume. The Fellows are made “lifetime members” of ACR and do not need to pay future membership fees to ACR. The Chair of the nomination committee chairs the Fellows award session in the year the award is given at the ACR conference.
Distinguished Service Award- Established in 1989, this award “recognizes the dedication and devotion of a member who has served the organization with the energy and generosity beyond the call of duty.” The award “expresses the Association's deepest gratitude to one who has helped its members in ways that have built a stronger community of scientists and scholars in the field of consumer research." The award is given at intervals corresponding to significant anniversaries of the association--say, for example, the 20th, 25th, 30th, 40th, 50th, etc. It is given using exactly the same procedure that characterizes the Fellows Award--i.e. via nominations from the Fellows Committee and selection by the full Board of Directors. The ACR Distinguished Service Award is completely independent from the Fellows Award in the sense that (a) it rests on different criteria (service vs. scholarship) and (b) the same person could, in theory, win both awards (but preferably not in the same year). This award is given every 5 years.
Next award date - Announced 2023 and given 2024. Winner will present at the Paris conference.
Long Term Contribution Award – This award is presented once every three years to honor the long-term contribution of an article that has had the greatest impact on the discipline. This used to be called the “JCR Long-Term Contribution Award” but was changed (effective 2017) with the approval of the Sheth Foundation to recognize articles in other journals that could have had a major impact on the field. The award goes to the article that has made the most significant impact on consumer behavior and must have been published at least ten years ago. The ACR-Sheth [JCR] Long-Term Contribution Award was first awarded in 2002. This award is given every 3 years.

Early Career Award - Each year, a panel of five ACR members is appointed by the ACR President to serve as a selection committee. The panel will solicit nominations from the ACR membership, and select one or more recipients of the award for their scholarly contributions to the field of consumer research. All nominees require a nomination letter from someone not serving on the selection committee. Criteria to be used to determine contribution include innovation, methodological rigor and the potential to substantially advance our understanding of consumer behavior. Once nominated, the nominee will remain in active consideration for the award for three successive years. That is, a nominee in one year will automatically be included in the consideration set for the subsequent two years without the need for re-nomination, as long as they remain eligible based on the year they received their PhD. The award includes a cash award and a plaque. This award is entirely funded by ACR.
This award was approved by the ACR Board in 2020 based on a request from Simonson’s former students who wished to contribute towards the award. An endowment was set up in 2023 at $34,900 to cover the cash award into perpetuity. It is presented annually to a consumer behavior researcher who received a PhD at least 10 years ago to honor their mentoring of doctoral students. The award is presented at the Awards Luncheon at our annual October ACR conference.
