As part of the East Lothian Partnership's consultation for the Local Outcome Improvement Plan (LOIP) 2026 - 2036, Acorn Resource Centre led a series of egagement sessions with BME and Muslim women across East Lothian. These women are often excluded from mainstream consultations, yet their voices are essential to shaping a more inclusive future.Â

The participants were predominantly Muslim women from diverse ethnic backgrounds, many of whom are first-generation migrants. They shared their lived experiences, challenges, and aspirations through informal, trauma-informed discussions held in safe, familiar spaces.
The conversations focused on three key themes:
The Economy: Barriers to employment, lack of childcare, and unrecognised informal work.
Reducing Inequalities: Experiences of racism, mental health stigma, and food insecurity.
Adapting to the Future: Safety in public spaces, housing challenges, and climate resilience.
