What is bullying?
Most of you know or have heard of the term bullying, but do you truly know what it means? "Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance." Bullying is not limited to but includes the following examples: name calling, making threats, attacking someone physically or verbally, spreading rumors, excluding one, etc.
Did you know that there are actually different categories of bullying?
Verbal Bullying
Social Bullying
Physical Bullying
Cyberbullying
Why is it important?
It is important to be aware of bullying and advocate against bullying because it can have lasting, damaging effects on the life of a child. There are many different types and degrees of bullying, but every kid is unique and responds to their situations differently.
The unfortunate fact of bullying is that school is where most bullying occurs. If we are aware that this issue is occurring at school, I believe that we should take as many steps as we can to prevent these situations from arising. We, as educators, along with parents, play a major role in the lives of our children, so we need to set the example and explain to students the consequences of bullying.
