PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

How physical activity functions as a treatment

Exercise and physical activity plays a huge role in treating mental illnesses. Exercise is extremely beneficial for producing a sense of wellness. Exercise promotes a high amount of energy during the day resulting in better sleep, sharper memories, better mood, and feelings of relaxation. Most importantly exercise promotes the release of endorphins and increases seretonin levels.

Here is what it does for anxiety, depression, ADD, and ADHD

ANXIETY: Exercise is a natural anti-anxiety treatment. It reduces stress and anxiety levels. For example, paying attention to the rhythm of feet hitting the ground or focusing on pace can be a huge distraction from any worries, and also help break the flow of constant worry in the mind. As anxiety causes much tension in the muscles and tightness in the chest, exercise is able to help relax and relieve tension in the body.

DEPRESSION: Studies have shown that exercise can treat mild to moderate cases of depression as effectively as antidepressants without the negative side effects. A study conducted by Harvard has shown that walking for just 15 minutes a day can reduce the risks of major depression by 26% and can also reduce the risk of any relapse.

ADD/ADHD: Physical activity can improve concentration, motivation, memory, and mood. This treatment immediately increases dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels. These three levels affect attention and focus. As a result, exercise is able to function in the same way as ADHD medication does such as Adderall and Ritalin.
