I collaborated with Prof. Dr. E. Roldan's research group to breathe new life into the mathematical research process through gamification. The idea is to take a mathematical research topic and turn it into a game.
Among the many benefits of "gamifying" math, let me mention three:
Outreach: By turning mathematical concepts into interactive games, we make math more accessible to a broader audience. It can inspire curiosity, promote learning, and encourage more people to take an interest in math.
Citizen Science: Gamification opens the door to what is often called "Citizen Science". For instance, scores generated by players can be interpreted as new bounds, which provide valuable insights into the mathematical problems from which the games originate.
New Research Pathways: Gamification may suggest new roads of research. The game often suggests a natural setup, follow-up questions, etcetera.
Here you will find two projects I have been helping bring to life: the Fence Challenge and Tlacuamatlatl.
Twelve pentominoes, one for each zodiac sign. One mission: use the tiles to build a fence, and enclose as much area as possible.
This problem was first posted in 1968 by Fr. V. Feser. This project aims to use gamification techniques and citizen science, to approach this challenge.
