We have all felt like “I don’t know what I need to know to support people with making maths accessible.” Here are suggestions from the working group about first steps to getting started with accessible maths. They come from a variety of perspectives for learning technologists, lecturers, disability services, someone working in a maths skills role etc
The Make Things Accessible website from London Universities is also a great place to start your general accessibility journey.
First Steps for Lecturers
First Step for Disability Support Workers
Find one student who needs accessible maths (ask Disability Services) and speak to them. Speak to their tutors and their transcriber, using the resources from STEMM or Accessible Equations to discuss what they need to know. Record this in some way (blog?) and use it as leverage to start an accessible maths working group at your university.
The first step would be to meet with students with additional requirements to understand their journey, including the barriers in place for accessing support. The (second) first step, would be to speak with stakeholders, internal and external and start watching the a11y-maths meeting recordings.
The why, the how, what resources are readily available and where they can get assistance. I like the idea of the buddy system: get students to help each other.
