Applications should be completed by the student's school district.
Dear Director of Special Education and Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments,
Allied Instructional Services is pleased to announce an opportunity for Virginia school divisions to participate in Access in Motion (AIM), an intensive Orientation and Mobility (O&M) instructional hub designed to support students who are blind or visually impaired.
Across Virginia, many school divisions continue to face challenges in securing certified O&M providers. AIM was developed to help address these service gaps by providing students with high-quality, community-based O&M instruction in authentic travel environments.
Access in Motion is a regional O&M hub model that delivers concentrated instruction focused on:
Independent travel skills
Environmental awareness
Route planning
Street crossing skills
Problem-solving and decision-making
Community travel experiences
Safe and effective use of mobility tools
Instruction occurs in real-world community settings, allowing students to apply travel skills in meaningful environments that cannot be replicated within traditional school settings.
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Dates: April 15–16
Hours: 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. each day
Cost: $500 per student, paid via Purchase Order within 30 days of receiving an acceptance letter
Participating school divisions are responsible for:
providing transportation to and from the Roanoke hub location
ensuring a school employee is present with the student and O&M instructor throughout the instructional day
supporting student participation for the full two-day experience
Participation in post-event survey
This opportunity may be especially beneficial for students who:
have O&M services identified on their IEP
are owed compensatory O&M services
have experienced interruptions in O&M service delivery
would benefit from intensive community-based mobility instruction
Participants will receive:
two days of intensive O&M instruction, up to 12 hours with 10 hours of specially designed instruction related to the student’s IEP goals
instruction from qualified Orientation and Mobility professionals
documentation of instructional activities and student progress
Space is limited to ensure individualized instruction and student safety. School divisions interested in reserving student placements are encouraged to respond as early as possible.
