Brief Description:

A gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) is an analytical method that combines the features of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify different substances present within a test sample. The difference in the chemical properties between molecules in a mixture and their relative affinity for the stationary phase of the column will promote the separation of the molecules as the sample travels the length of the column. When an identifying mass spectrum appears at a characteristic retention time in a GCMS analysis, it typically increases the certainty that the analyte of interest is in the sample. The modern approach of tagging gas chromatography with mass spectrometry is very useful and we get a confirmed idea of what chemical compounds we are dealing with. Applications include drug detection, environmental analysis, bio-analysis of samples.
