Welcome to my website! I created this site for teachers and educators who, like me, are looking for ways to integrate art into the elementary curriculum. Art is often a subject that is less prioritized than other core subject areas, whether that is due to budget cuts, standardized tests, or a fear of teaching a subject you may not know much about. Not being an artist myself, I thought this website would be a great resource to help teachers like me who want to do art in their classrooms in order to provide their students with the many benefits of art integration. Enjoy!
I am a third grade teacher in Moraga, California. I am working on my Master's in Teaching degree at Saint Mary's College. I wanted to focus my capstone project on art integration because I was truly inspired working at an Arts Magnet School during my student teaching experience, and seeing the positive impact art can have on children. This website is a result of my capstone project.
This art unit revolves around three abstract artists: Wassily Kandinsky, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. I chose these artists because of their unique abstract styles. I chose to focus on abstract artists because of my experiences teaching children abstract art. I have found that abstract art allows all students to feel like artists. It removes some of the pressure of making something look realistic in their art. Instead, students have the freedom to express themselves by using color and line. This unit was designed for 3rd grade teachers to use in their 3rd classrooms, but can be modified for lower and upper grade levels as well.
