Images of Life, an artist exhibition presented by Phish Tea Cafe "a journey for the senses" and features the works of Afrika Abney. It is curated by Alphonso Coles (a visual artist and percussionist) and Prelli Williams (curator for DC Sanctuary Gallery and Performance Space and resident artist.)

Images of Life is on view at Phish Tea Cafe located 1335 H St NE (1st Fl - Lyme Lounge)

Washington, DC from July 31, 2005 - September 3, 2005. 


It consists of 24 pieces of artwork which includes abstract paintings and collages created on canvas and paper. It will feature several popular works including Earth, Wind and Fire, Dancing Fire #1, Dancing Fire #2, Butterfly #1, Butterfly #2, Shadow of A Man #1, Ascension/Powerful Images, La Vertus de Afrique/The figures of Africa, and Liberation. Images of Life will also feature several of her inspirational and visionary pieces such as Rhythmic Movement, Smokey Stones, Flower, Abstractions #1, Abstractions #2, Images of Life, Abstractions, The Mask #1, The Mask #2, The Eyes, Maze, Monumental Figures #1, Monumental Figures #2, Monumental Figures #3 and Monumental Figures #4.

A small crowd attended the opening reception for Images of Life at Phish Tea Cafe and were very pleased with the presentation of the show. The people who attended the opening reception on July 31, 2005 commented on several pieces which include Earth, Wind and Fire, Dancing Fire #1, Dancing Fire #2, Butterfly #1, and Butterfly #2. With each of these pieces the viewers liked the sense of color, rhythm, imagery and overall inspiration behind the pieces. Others commented on The Mask #1, The Mask #2, Monumental Figures #1, and Monumental Figures #2. There were many pieces in the show that grabbed the viewers attention.

Images of Life is the way of living, believing, appreciating the gifts of love, joy, and sorrow, and the challenges of love and life itself.


Ms. Afrika Abney is an alumnus of the prestigious Corcoran School of Art. She is an accomplished professional visual artist and is influenced by such artists as Jorge Somarriba, Marvin Sin, Lois M. Jones, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, and Sam Gilliam.
