You ought to know what your City is doing. After all, it is your government. Have you ever been surprised and wondered "How and when was this decided?" That shouldn't happen. It's a sign that your government is failing to communicate- or just doesn't want to.
First, I will encourage the Council to return to the long-standing two Council meetings a month format as it did for decades. I will advocate for this because I believe this allows for greater opportunity for proposed actions to be noticed and commented on by the public. I think the majority of actions should be Council agenda items for two meetings. The first meeting they are proposed/discussed, the second is for discussion/possible action. At only one Common Council meeting a month, I am concerned that too much discussion is taking place at less noted, and less attended, committee meetings.
Regardless of the Common Council's enthusiasm for doubling whole-body monthly meetings, I will re-institute the Mayor's Report as a bi-monthly sharing of information of where the City is, and what we are working towards. I would prefer that this update be at Council meetings to allow the Council the opportunity to ask questions, but I will hold them twice a month, in-person and live-streamed, with or without the Council.
I will work with the local newspaper, radio stations, and internet outlets to let you know what is being considered, when it is being discussed, and when voted on. I'll even post the Mayor's report where ever I can for all who don't get to see/participate in it live.
I will also have a "JOIN US!" button on the City's home page. You should always be one easy click away from seeing what's happening in the next couple of weeks with your City government.
==================================================
A culture of accountability starts at the top! I will have a Mayor's schedule posted for all to see. You deserve to know what your highest (and most expensive) elected official is doing on your behalf. You can get an idea of what this begins to look like with the ABLE.VOTE schedule on the left.
I will hold Open Office Hours weekly to be available to everyone and anyone in the City! The Mayor's Office will try several different times to see which ones work best, but there will be Mornings, Afternoons, Evenings, and Weekends available. Your Mayor should be available to YOU!
Of course, you can also schedule to meet. I will always ask anyone who requests this to allow their name and the subject of the meeting will be available to see on the Mayor's Posted Schedule. Private requests will, of course, be accepted, but confidentiality should be shown to be essential. Convenience is never an acceptable reason for Secrecy! Any meeting with the members/subject matter withheld will have that request considered by at least two people at City Hall.
I will use social and conventional media appearances to highlight what your City is doing by always inviting others from the City (Council, Department Heads, employees, committee members, citizens) to join me. That's because it's not about me; it's about all of us!
