While there is a consistent framework for delivery of numeracy, both within the teaching of mathematics and across the broader curriculum, how schools organise the oversight and management of delivery does vary. In some schools, there will be a middle manager who is responsible for both, while in others the responsibility for cross-curricular numeracy might fall to a member of staff who does not specifically have a mathematics background.
Recent ESTYN reports for Swansea schools have highlighted that there are inconsistencies in key aspects such as planning suitable activities in meaningful contexts, tracking progression and evaluating the development of numeracy skills.
During the 2025-26 academic year, these will be delivered by our Partneriaith colleagues and places can be booked from the Partneriaeth Professional Learning page here.
Target Audience:
Primary school teachers who have responsibility for coordinating the development and delivery of the numeracy framework across the school curriculum.
Session Aims:
The termly Primary Mathematics and Numeracy Leads network will allow opportunity for all to share, discuss and enhance knowledge and understanding of Mathematics and Numeracy and the skills to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness this AoLE within their schools. Practitioners will develop pedagogical knowledge that supports the effective delivery of Mathematics and Numeracy, ensuring all learners will make progress.
Attendees will engage with and have a better understanding of Mathematics and Numeracy in order to design their local curriculum.
Attendees will have a deeper understanding of progression through the five proficiencies.
Attendees will develop pedagogical knowledge in order to support effective design and implementation.
Attendees will develop skills and understanding to become reflective AoLE leads in order to monitor and evaluate effectively.
Attendees will decide content for termly networks and have opportunities to share Curriculum for Wales experiences.
Funding:
There will be no central funding available for these sessions.

The properties of different data types
Qualitative
Quantitative, discrete and continuous
Methods of grouping data
Tally charts and frequency tables
Carroll and Venn diagrams
Consider the thoughts of ESTYN on Data Handling
Methods of representing data

In an ideal world every school would have a full quota of qualified teachers of mathematics. However, for a variety of reasons this is not always the case. As such, Swansea is committed to providing subject enhancement support to individuals such as non-specialist teachers, newly qualified teachers, teaching assistants or learning coaches who recognise that they would benefit from additional support in improving their knowledge and understanding of aspects of mathematics and numeracy.
Each session will outline the pupil progression though the area, suggest suitable teaching approaches, identify common misconceptions and share examples of assessment opportunities.
Target Audience:
Teachers, learning coaches and teaching assistants from across the primary and secondary sectors who wish to enhance their subject knowledge. Each session will be discrete so that you may attend only the sessions that interest you.
Session Aims:
2.1 Factors, Multiples and Prime Numbers (PS 3/4)
2.2 Sequences in algebra (PS2,3, 4)
2.3 Negative Numbers (PS 3/4)
2.4 Circles – circumference & area (PS4)
2.5 Right angled triangles – Pythagoras’ theorem and trigonometry (PS4/5)
2.6 Probability (PS3/4)
Funding:
£180 per school will be provided to support attendance for this half day session.

How do we ensure that pupils are given opportunities to effectively develop the 5 proficiencies which are central to the CfW Mathematics and Numeracy curriculum? Sessions will focus upon improving problem solving skills through metacognitive approaches, developing questioning strategies to promote higher order thinking and using low-floor, high ceiling activities to provide stretch and challenge across the ability range.
The visualiser can be a powerful tool when interacting with learners both in a live classroom setting and when sharing feedback online. This session will allow teachers to practice using a visualiser when taking a class through an 'I do, we do, you do' demonstration activity. The session will also upskill the teacher on how to record an assessment-feedback clip and turn it into a printed QR label to fix on pupil work.
Target Audience:
Teacher’s from across both the Primary and Secondary.
Session Aims:
In this session we will learn to:
Connect and install software for YOUR visualiser and label printer
Practice using visualiser in a variety of contexts
Feeding back on a pupil’s work
Recording pupil discussion
Recording a class demo
Upload video clips to Google Drive and share safely using printed QR codes
Create a class website and upload your demo clips
Consider different ways to use the kit in your classrooms
Funding:
There will be no direct funding available to support attendance. However each delegate will be given a visualiser and QR label printer to use back in their classroom.
