Dr. Malek is actively engaged in mentoring graduate students, early-career researchers, and interns across interdisciplinary areas spanning electrochemistry, materials science, environmental chemistry, and energy systems. His mentoring approach emphasizes independent thinking, rigorous experimental design, and clear scientific communication, with a focus on preparing mentees for careers in academia, industry, and research-driven innovation. He has supported students and junior researchers from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, guiding them through research planning, data collection & interpretation, and thesis preparation.
I was fortunate to be mentored by Dr. Malek during my MSc research project at IIT Madras, and his guidance played an important role in shaping my academic and professional development.
My thesis was on "In situ prepared systems for hydrogen production via chemical water splitting at room temperature". Throughout my MSc work, Dr. Malek was deeply involved in my training and learning. He explained concepts clearly and patiently, often breaking down complex ideas into simpler steps that made them easier to understand.
Dr. Malek created a supportive environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and discussing ideas openly. He encouraged me to think independently while always being available for guidance when I needed. His feedback was thoughtful and constructive, and it helped me improve both my scientific thinking and research skills.
What stood out most was his approachable and understanding nature, as well as his respect for individual learning styles. Beyond technical training, he emphasized critical thinking, perseverance, and scientific honesty- values that continue to guide me in my work.
Based on my experience as his MSc student, I believe Dr. Malek has the qualities of an excellent faculty member and mentor. He would be a valuable asset to any academic institution.

I have had the utmost privilege of being mentored by Dr. Abdul Malek during my master’s thesis journey at KAUST from June 2025 to May 2026. His practical and theoretical knowledge greatly helped me get started with research at KAUST. Dr. Malek’s way of explaining both simple and complex experimental procedures was very accessible to me as someone new to the Low-carbon Energy Conversion & Storage Lab (LECS) and to many electrochemistry concepts. His commitment to excellence is noteworthy, especially in how thoroughly he taught me laboratory techniques.
One strength Dr. Malek exemplifies is his willingness to help in both professional settings and beyond research at any time, often answering my questions after work hours comprehensively and almost immediately. The time he dedicates to the well-being of his mentees and students makes him a valuable asset to any institution or company.
Overall, Dr. Abdul Malek’s teaching and mentorship have made me a more well-rounded researcher and a better person. He has shown me that, with the right mindset, everything is within reach. Dr. Malek’s work and guidance will always leave a lasting imprint on my professional and personal life, and I have nothing but positive things to say about him. I wish him the very best in whatever he chooses to pursue.
