The mission of ABC Trails is to advocate for practices that maintain mature forests along the trails in the Bayfield County Special Management Areas for Recreation.

We aim to elevate the voices of citizens, stakeholders, and trail users who are concerned about plans to continue logging (clearcutting and thinning) within the recreational areas in Bayfield county. These areas include the Birkie trail, North End Ski Trails, CAMBA mountain bike trails, and Mt. Ashwabay ski and bike trails. These trails systems are heavily used for year-round silent sports recreation, and also serve as the site for major bike, ski, and running events throughout the year.

We ask Bayfield County to work collaboratively with citizens and stakeholders to adopt new goals for management of the forests in the recreational areas, honoring the desire of trail users to bike, hike, and ski through mature forests.

Who are we?

The Alliance for Bayfield County Trails is a group of concerned citizens, trail users, and stakeholders advocating for deeper consideration and prioritization of the aesthetic experience of the trails designated as "Special Management for Recreation, Aesthetic Zone A" in the Bayfield County Forest Land Use Plan. We believe that the recreational trails in these areas are incredible assets for our community, enjoyed by residents on a regular basis, and contributing to the high quality of life in our region. They also represent a significant recreational tourism asset, as people from across the midwest are drawn to the mature forests surrounding these trails. Finally, enormous amounts of financial investment and thousands of volunteer labor hours have gone into building and maintaining world class bike and ski trails in Bayfield County. We are advocating for the preservation of mature forests to maintain the user experience of these fantastic trails, in the face of plans to continue to log across many of these trails.
