De gemeente heeft 89.710 inwoners (bron: gemeentelijke administratie per 1 januari 2019) en een oppervlakte van 908 km²,

onderverdeeld in 578 km² land en 330 km² water.

Hiermee is het qua totaaloppervlakte en landoppervlakte de grootste gemeente van Nederland.
