How I balance fitness with a full time career.
For years, I struggled to maintain a consistent workout routine. I’d start strong, but within days, I’d feel frustrated and overwhelmed, convinced that I had no time outside of work. The last thing I wanted to do with the little free time I had was work out! I found myself stuck in a cycle of feeling unmotivated and sluggish. The less I worked out, the less I wanted to work out.
Fast forward a couple of years, and I've finally established a routine that works for me—and I’m in the best shape of my life! Despite working full-time as an engineer, commuting an hour each way, and juggling more responsibilities than ever, I’ve managed to run multiple half marathons after years of struggling to run a single mile without stopping. I’m stronger and more capable than I’ve ever been.
What truly made the difference for me was changing my perspective on my routine. I used to think that the key to success was sticking to the same workout schedule every week. While that approach works for some people, it didn’t work for me. The rigid structure made me feel like all my time outside of work was consumed by exercise, leaving no room for other hobbies, family, or relaxation. Instead, I embraced flexibility in my routine, and it’s been a game-changer.
Interval Run & Full Body Strength
I use Peloton for both and highly recommend. It keeps me focused and entertained. I have this treadmill which is perfect for my home gym. Especially now that it's dark all the time. This has been a game changer in sticking to a consistent routine.
Outdoor Run on Lunch Break
I'm super fortunate that my office has showers. Since it's dark when I wake up and dark when I get out of work, this is really the only way I can run outside while it's light out. It is such a great way to break up the day. If it's an option for you I would definitely recommend!
Heated Yoga Sculpt
I found a yoga studio that I love. The heated sculpt class is really just a full body strength workout, but it leaves me so sweaty and sore. I also find the group setting so empowering!
Full Body Strength
Again using Peloton!
Rest Day
Long Run & Full Body Strength or Pilates
This completely depends what I have going on that weekend, but I typically do a long run one day, and a full body strength or Pilates class the other! Sometimes the strength day will be replaced by a rest day. My long runs vary in length from 6 miles to 12 miles, depending where I am in a half marathon training cycle.
As you can see, I mix up my workouts to keep things fresh and engaging! Peloton has made strength training much more accessible for me. By varying my routine throughout the week, I avoid getting bored, which has been key in helping me stick to a consistent movement schedule.
