WGST/AAUP Teach In: The Freedom to Teach and the Right to Learn
WHEN: Tuesday, April 14, from 1 – 3 PM (feel free to come and go as needed)
WHERE: The Georges Auditorium, Lower Level, David B. Miller Business Quad (#4 on this map) and hybrid on Zoom
At public universities across Texas, faculty are being deprived of the freedom to teach—and students are being deprived of the opportunity to learn—about relevant and important topics. Courses are being cancelled and censored, departments are being shuttered, and the academic freedom of faculty and free speech rights of students are being infringed upon. We are speaking up about these important issues in solidarity with those who cannot easily do so.
Please join us for two interactive panel discussions:
- 1 – 2 PM: Discussing participants’ experiences of censorship and the importance of academic freedom
- 2 – 3 PM: Discussing the topics—including gender, race, and sexuality studies—that have recently been censored
Free food -- snacks and drinks provided!
Sponsored by SMU Women’s and Gender Studies, the SMU Chapter of the AAUP (American Association of University Professors), and SMU Human Rights.
Open to the public – whether in person or online, we welcome students, faculty, and staff from SMU and other universities as well as community members to join us.
We especially welcome students from public universities in Texas to attend our second panel, so they can learn more about the topics that are being censored at their own institutions.
