As a national organization of long standing, AAUP has central committments including defense of academic freedom and tenure, of meaningful faculty voice in university decisions, and of shared governance. In addition to these things, however, the central goal of an advocacy chapter like ours is to get faculty talking to and sharing information directly with each other, to use these conversations to identify areas of common concern, and to mobilize faculty expertise and initiative to fix problems and push for meaningful change.  If you think it's a problem when construction projects and administrative hires go forward while faculty working conditions diminish and tuition increases, that big decisions that affect teaching and students have already been made before or regardless of whether faculty input is solicited, or that the priorities that drive decision making are too often detached from the educational and intellectual values central to a university, you are not alone. We are not alone. But things will not actually change if we don't make the space to talk to each other and use our knowledge and experience to push for more engagement and meaningful collaboration with faculty in order to increase transparency and mutual understanding, and to push for better solutions where these are needed.

The GVSU AAUP Chapter

All GVSU faculty are welcome and encouraged to participate in AAUP meetings and events. We sponsor a listserv, hold meetings, and try to organize more focused events or panel discussions at least once a year. The easiest way to get involved is to join the listserv.  We use non-GVSU e-mail addresses and you can be added to and removed from the list discussions at any time. Just ask: aaup.gvsu@gmail.com.

The National Organization

To become a voting member of the GVSU Chapter it is necessary to become a dues-paying member of the national AAUP itself. We strongly recommend that everyone consider doing so, as broader full-membership representation helps to diversify and strengthen the Chapter, and to make available the full benefits of affiliation with the national organization. Any GVSU faculty member, whether tenured, tenure-track, affiliate, visitor, or adjunct, can join the national AAUP as a member and participate in the GVSU Chapter. There are annual dues to be a member of AAUP national (the GVSU Advocacy Chapter does not charge dues). Dues paid to the national organization go to support advocacy, policy statements, and investigations nationwide

With questions or to request to be added to the listserv hosted by AAUP@GVSU, write to: aaup.gvsu@gmail.com.
