AAUP@GV College Affordability Event

On Monday February 28, 2022 at 7:00 PM the AAUP Advocacy Chapter at GVSU partnered with faculty experts and student representatives from the Student Senate's Diversity Action Committee to hold the campus-wide virtual event

Understanding College Affordability:

Causes of Rising Costs, Student Experiences, and Policy Alternatives

The event featured presentations from GVSU faculty who have studied college affordability issues and current policy proposals for "free college", student perspectives on college affordability, and the perspective of the AAUP@GV advocacy chapter on these issues as they relate to budget transparency and accountability for students and faculty alike. The presentations and discussion afterward provided valuable insights and raised awareness of common concerns that we hope to find ways to address as we continue to work on these issues. The GVSU Lanthorn provided an excellent write-up of the presenations and discussion at the event, available here, and the presentation titles and some of the slides are linked below. Thanks to everyone for their involvement on this important issue!

Prof. Denise Goerisch (Integrative Studies): "The Lived Experiences of Student Debt”

Prof. Michelle Miller-Adams (Political Science): “Does Free College Have a Future?”

Prof. Joel Stillerman (Sociology/Honors/AAUP): “Budget Transparency and University Accountability”

Kyle Gineman and Larbi Al-Moutaa (Student Senate Diversity Action Committee): “Student Perspectives on Affordability and Debt”
