Abstract: In a period that goes from the 18th century to the year of Brazilian Independence (1822), a profound moment of change is recognized at the level of military sciences and in particular smoothbore artillery. Portugal on the European continent and in South America (Brazil) remained in conflict almost constantly with Spain, but also with France and the Netherlands. Today, the Brazilian Army and the Portuguese Army share a common history about this period and it is within this context that this study is presented, with particular interest for all those who wish to know a little more about the technological evolution of smoothbore weapons, but also on their influence on military organization and the development of battlefield tactics.
