A Baseball History Journal

“Spotlighting the American Association of Professional Baseball Clubs from 1902 to 1952”

• • • •

Since 2001, the American Association Almanac has focused its research and reporting on the players, teams and ballparks of the "original" American Association from the years 1902 to 1952 for the cities of Columbus, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Louisville, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Paul and Toledo.

While the league endured through the 1962 season, its presumptive legacy lies in the first 50 years of its history. From 1902 to 1952, the eight original teams remained intact as a circuit. This period continues to provide the Almanac’s central focus.

With regard to league records, playoffs and All Star games, the remaining years through 1962 are also covered. The league was resurrected in 1969 in an entirely different form, but the Almanac maintains its commitment to the period 1902 to 1962.

In the Fall of 2020, the Almanac will publish an examination of the American Association playoffs from 1953 to 1962.

The American Association Almanac is a print publication which originally came about in 2001 as the American Association Newsletter with the simple purpose of conveying the same sense of exploration and discovery that came about as the result of the many visits to the grave sites of former American Association ballplayers my wife and I have made.

The Almanac is now a comprehensive baseball history journal, published twice a year. It is maintained in order to chronicle the events which shaped the American Association.

For most fans during pre-television days, the only way to follow the teams of their particular locale was through print media. It is through this format that the Almanac perpetuates the legacy of the teams and players of this venerable circuit.

For the past several years the Almanac has developed a two-pronged content pattern.

The Spring issue stresses a statistical analysis for a given set of data during a specific time period, while the Fall issue presents an anecdotal focus on game accounts and biographical elements. This division helps provide balance in terms of how the story of the circuit is told.

This website has three essential purposes:
1) to allow the general public access to the American Association legacy;
 2) to provide a means by which the data derived from research into American Association topics can be shared with the public; and finally
3) to seek support for the Almanac’s work.

Please consider purchasing a subscription to the paper publication delivered by postal mail twice per year. Rates are $24.00 for 1 year, $42.00 for 2 yrs. or $60 for institutional single-year subscriptions.

The Almanac is accepting donations in any amount.

This project is a one-person operation and subscriptions cover only a small portion of the costs involved with maintaining a quality research-based, data-driven print publication.
